Sacramento State Student Health and Counseling Services, in coordination with Sacramento State School of Nursing, held a Flu Clinic.

The Wednesday event is a free service that SHCS and the California Student Nursing Association puts on every year for students.

“We have all forms of the vaccine; if there are any issues with allergies we can address that,” said clinical Dr. Katherine Kelly, associate professor of the Sac State School of Nursing. “If there are people that prefer not to get an injection we have the flu mist as well.”

Faculty and staff can also get a flu shot or mist at the cost of $15.

According to Janet Dumonchelle, pharmacist-in-charge of the pharmacy at the WELL, students can follow these simple steps to help prevent catching the flu: Hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, and getting the flu shot or flu mist.

“We are doing intramuscular injections, and we are getting a chance to use those skills,” said Donna Keane-Mauro, a third semester Sac State nursing student.

Lauren Montero, a Sac State gerontology major, gets her flu shot every year as part of her service learning class requirements and as a yearly routine.

“We have to get a flu shot to work with elders,” Montero said. “Once in a while I’ll get a little bit sick but not severely.”

SHCS have seven more flu clinics planned, the next one being Oct. 8, 2015 in the University Union lobby from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
