For the first time this season the Hornets are on a tear with their three-match winning streak after sweeping Loyola Marymount University 7-0 on the road Sunday afternoon.

No. 75 Sacramento State women’s tennis is now 9-7 overall and 5-7 against nonconference opponents this spring.

The women jumped out in doubles with two strong wins from junior duo Olivia Boija and Jennifer Ong in position No. 1 and Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Daria Savchenko in No. 3 with final scores of 6-2.

Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici’s match against LMU’s Ellie Grossman and Jessica Perez was left unfinished after the women secured the first point of the match. At the time, the two sophomores were down 3-5.

Quick set wins in singles No. 6, 5 and 4 by the Hornets allowed the women to clinch the match at 4-0. Boija’s win in No. 4 was the point that decided the victory as she downed Julia Norlin 6-2, 6-1. The junior captain was able to even up her singles record at 8-8.

Freshman Loaiza Esquivias continued her bright play with her 6-1, 6-2 slashing of Lisa Piller. Her and Savchenko are the only women on Sac State’s squad to have winning singles records with more than six starts. The freshman is 10-3 and her doubles partner is 7-3.

The Hornets dropped only one set in the entire match. It came in singles No. 2 when redshirt freshman Anna-Maria Nau lost her first one 2-6, but came back to overpower LMU’s Anna Romeka 6-1, 10-8.

The women will return to Big Sky Conference action on Saturday in their doubleheader against the University of Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. and the University of North Dakota at 3 p.m. at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
