Students boast research at symposium

Sacramento State’s Research Symposium recognized students and faculty in their research and awarded scholarships based on their accomplishments.

The presentations were a mixture of 93 graduate and undergraduate student presentations. Students had to either give oral presentations, or display their research on a poster.

The winners of the symposium were awarded $500 for the top two oral presenters for both graduate and undergraduate, and $250 for the poster presentations. The team mentors or the winners also received $500 for professional development funds.

The presentations revolved around different majors at Sac State, including communications, biology, history, and public policies.

Each presentation had to be completed in a 10-minute limit with three minutes allowed at the end for questions.

Communications Professor Michelle Foss-Snowden attended presentations for the graduate department, and was pleased with the amount of knowledge students had about their research projects.

“It was very clear,” said Foss-Snowden. “They explained themselves well and we get a lot of pride by watching them.”

After the oral presentations, the students who made posters presented their work from different fields.

Biology Professor Kelly McDonald, who judged some of the poster boards, said it is neat to have students teach other students.

Sac State Provost Fedrika Harmsen attended the event and said she was excited to be there and the response for student research has been overwhelming.

“I’m amazed at the level of research and the amount of research that’s going on at Sacramento State,” said Harmsen. “A lot of this work is original and a lot of it is exciting.

The students who won will be going to San Bernardino to further present their research.
