Sacramento State men’s tennis was at the top of its game in the men’s 6-1 win against Eastern Washington University Saturday, only losing the doubles point to their Big Sky Conference opponent.

The Hornets only had one singles match go to three sets, No. 6 singles player, Joaquin Marquez, who beat Rendell Burghart 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Marquez has been an important spark for the team with his perfect 3-0 record in singles matches this season since being inserted into the lineup on March 7 against UT Arlington.

Senior Roy Brandys continues to get better as this season goes on and was 2-0 in his matches against Eastern Washington. He won his third straight singles match 7-6, 6-1 and won the only doubles set on the day for the Hornets with junior Sean Kolar, 7-6 (7-2).

Kolar competed as the No. 1 singles player for Sac State and won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The junior is now 6-5 in singles on the season.

Niranjan Ram won his second consecutive singles match coming off an injury and beat Luke Thompson in the No. 3 spot for the Hornets.

Senior Tom Miller, after a rough start in singles for the first month, is starting to get back to form. He overcame Eduardo Bringold 6-3, 7-5 and has won three straight singles matches without dropping a set.

Kasparas Zemaitelis is another player for the Hornets who is starting to perform at a higher level. He beat Eduardo Martinez as the No. 4 singles player and has won two of his last three singles matches.

The men had their opportunities in doubles to take the point in all three matches with all of them going into a tiebreak situation. Miller and Marquez lost 7-6 (8-6) as the No. 2 doubles, and Zemaitelis and freshman Christopher Clayton lost their match 7-5.

The Hornets will finish their weekend on the road against Gonzaga University on March 15 at 11 a.m.
