Sacramento State women’s softball team defeated Loyola Marymount University in their final game of the So Cal Collegiate Classic. Senior outfielder Paige Martin had a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to secure their second win of the season.

The Hornets finished the tournament this weekend with a 2-1 overall record, beating LMU 4-1 today.

The women had a slow start Saturday morning as LMU scored in the first inning, but the Hornets were able to tie the game up in the third when Martin singled up the middle, scoring Alexa Chattleton.

With some trouble with their offense today they managed to keep the game tied until Sac State took the lead away from LMU in the seventh inning.

The game was tied 1-1 when Martin hit a three-run homer in the seventh, scoring Kayla Papez and Shelby Johnston.

Martin had four at bats today with one homer and four RBIs, recording a batting average of .300. Last year, she led the team in runs scored, home runs, and slugging percentage.

While Martin was a key player in today’s game, pitcher Celina Matthias also had a huge impact on their win.

On the mound starting for Sac State was junior Jennifer Hartman. She was relieved by Matthias after completing one inning. Hartman gave up two hits, one walk and LMU’s only run.

The right-handed pitcher came in at the start of the bottom of the second inning and finished the game. She had a total of four strikeouts and didn’t allow any runs through six innings.

Sac State’s defense allowed only three runs in their past two games.

As the Hornets head home today, they will begin to prepare for next weekend’s tournament at Fresno State. Their first game will be on Friday, Feb. 13 against causeway rival UC Davis at 9 a.m.
