Sac State Career Fair attracts waves of employers and applicants

The Sacramento State Career Fair hosted about 115 employers hailing from technology companies, law enforcement, hospitality, and state and federal jobs, all with the intention of recruiting future employees or interns.

Kelly Banegas, a representative for California Highway Patrol, said the company is looking to hire full-time dispatchers.

“We need someone who can multi-task, because there are times when you will have to be taking a call and typing the information given to you,” Banegas said. “We need people who are honest, even if you have a criminal record, because it is better to be honest than for us to find out in a background investigation.”

She also recommended requesting a sit-along with the Highway Patrol Dispatch Center if the position sounds interesting.

Laura Nicholls, personnel liaison with the State Controller’s Office, said they are looking for enthusiastic employees eager to learn their processes.

“Some of the people who do not succeed in our department are typically wanting too much too fast, such as making more money and going to a higher position,” Nicholls said. “We need to make sure you are trained properly before promotions, because we deal with the state’s budget.”

Brenda York, corporate recruiter for Bisco Industries, said she was seeking out future employees and informing them of the requirements to be considered.

“We need someone charismatic to interact with our customers,” York said. “They need to be goal-oriented and enjoy sales.”

Cein Mathisen, coordinator of the career fair, was pleased with the amount of people who attended and stated the benefits of the fair for students and employers.

“I am really happy with the turnout,” Mathisen said. “The career fair is normally held on Wednesdays, but we decided to change it to Friday this time, figuring more students are free on Fridays. I am happy all of the employers came. Some of the more popular employers have been the FBI, Toyota and VSP Global. All of the students are dressed very professionally, and the event is going great.”
