The California State Student Association has recognized Speaker of the Assembly Toni G. Atkins as its Legislator of the Year.

Atkins, who has served in the California State Assembly since 2010, will be honored by the CSSA at the California Higher Education Student Summit on March, 1 at Sacramento State.

“Speaker Atkins has been unwavering in her support for the CSU and its students through her fight to secure additional funding in the 2014 budget, her introduction of a bill to provide CSU with $50 million in one-time funding, and her regular attendance at the CSU Board of Trustees meetings,” said CSSA Chair Devon Graves in a press release. “I commend her for boldly advocating for the restoration of CSU’s budget and supporting critical investment in student services.”

Annually the CSSA recognizes a legislator who demonstrates a commitment to improving the CSU system and encourages student advocacy.

Atkins represents the 78th district in San Diego, and also advocates on behalf of women, affordable housing, veterans and the homeless.
