Sacramento State women’s tennis (0-2) is mimicking the start of its 2014 season as the team has dropped their second straight match of the year with their loss to San Jose State (1-2) on Saturday afternoon.

The women were swept by the Spartans 7-0, and the only win they were able to come out with was at No. 2 doubles.

Coach Dima Hrynashka said this is obviously not how he wanted the women to start out, but knows moving forward they will need to figure out a way to set a lineup that will be able to compete until their top singles players come back.

“It was a really similar match, like it was on Wednesday,” Hrynashka said. “The matches could’ve gone either way, but it was tough having them sweep us 7-0. Daria [Savchenko] and Jennifer [Nguyen], soon I hope will start in a few weeks, but we have to be careful with their injuries.”

Although Nguyen wasn’t in the singles lineup, her and Olivia Boija continued with their strong performance in the second position of doubles as they defeated their opponents, Malin Cubukcu and Marie Klocker, 6-1 in a quick fashion.

The Spartans were able to down the Hornets 1-6, 2-6 in doubles No. 1 and 3 respectively to gain the first point of the match. There was a lineup change in No. 1 doubles for Sac State, which paired freshman Anna-Maria Nau with Tori Trylovich.

Alina Soltanici was partnered up with freshman Anna Loaiza Esquivias again to complete the final doubles pair.

Soltanici had another stellar start in position No. 1 singles, where she battled it out against the Spartans’ Sybille Gauvain. The sophomore lost a close first set 5-7, but rallied back in the second set to give her a 6-4 win.

However, in the third set the women were forced into a tiebreaker. Both opponents were hitting the ball short and looked exhausted due to the two and half hour match. A slew of unforced errors that resulted in points in favor of the Hornet allowed the sophomore to get back into the set, but Soltanici ceded to Gauvain 6-7(5) and prompted San Jose to get the sweep.

In singles No. 2 and 4 there was a tiebreaker in the second set as Deimante Bulatovaite and Boija were slightly edged out by their San Jose State competitors to squander any chance of a comeback. Bulatovaite who was replaced in doubles No. 1 finished with a 1-6, 6-7(8) score and Boija lost at 0-6, 6-7(3).

Nau again had to be stretched out by the trainers during her singles match due to having cramps. In position No. 3 for singles she lost 1-6, 4-6. At this point in the contest the women were down 0-4, which resulted in their automatic loss.

Trylovich who had a good showing in her first singles match for Sac State was quickly downed 2-6, 3-6 to give the women their first loss at singles. Freshman Loaiza Esquivias couldn’t put away her opponent in the second set of her match at No. 6 and lost in the third set (6-4, 2-6, 2-6).

The women’s next opportunity to pick up their first vicyory of the season will come against rival UC Davis on Friday at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

“I think we will have a good chance to get a first win this season [against UC Davis],” Hrynashka said. “We’ll work specifically for this match next week, with doubles and singles combinations and we’ll see.”
