Sacramento State women’s soccer (6-9-0) were defeated by Idaho State (6-7-0) by a final score of 3-2 this afternoon at Hornet Field. It was the Hornets second overtime game of the 2014 season.

Two yellow cards were given to the Hornets in the physical matchup. One in the first half, and the other in the second half. It was a back-and-forth game as the two teams were trading goals with each other throughout the contest.

Sac State coach Randy Dedini said the team played hard and fought well, despite all that, he was frustrated with the final result today.

“Yeah I mean it’s definitely frustrating, I thought our girls played really hard, they played pretty well, we created a lot of great chances,” Dedini said. “We just didn’t finish enough of our chances.”

Offensively for the Hornets, they outshot the Bengals 11-5 in the first half and 8-4 in the second half, with a total of 19-11 shots on the day. The Bengals added two more shots in overtime.

In the 42nd minute of the contest, the Hornets were down 1-0 when Idaho State scored an own goal to tie things up. Sac State’s defender Kassi Anast rocketed a shot past midfield, the ball hit off the post then off of the Bengal’s keeper Sheridan Hapsic and deflected into the net.

Anast like Dedini felt the team played hard, just didn’t quite get the result that they were looking for today.

“I never felt like we were out of it, this whole season we’ve kind of been great at fighting and coming back from behind and that’s what we did today,” Anast said. “We felt really unlucky with that one minute in overtime, but we were fighting and we’re going to keep doing that the rest of the season.”

In the second half the Bengal’s Amanda Ellsworth scored 12 minutes in to break the 1-1 tie. Eighteen minutes later, the Hornets sophomore defender Rachel Leonard scored with a give-and-go lead pass from mid box to left with junior forward Josie Jogwe to tie the game up at two a piece.

Leonard felt really good with her second half goal that tied the game up as the two teams were looking to head into overtime.

“I’ve been just trying to make those runs up for my team and to be able to put one away finally, it just felt really good to help our team go into overtime,” Leonard said.

Sac State women’s soccer celebrated senior day for its six senior student-athletes on the team’s 28-player roster. The senior Hornets were honored prior to the announcement of the starting lineups and were greeted by their families and friends.

Up next for the Hornets, they will play at North Dakota on Friday, Oct. 17.
