West Sacramento’s Bike Dog Brewery is all about creating good beer while at the same time supporting the community and helping the environment.

As the Farm-to-Fork celebration comes to a close, it is good to know that companies like Bike Dog Brewery are keeping the philosophy going year-round.

According to the Farm-to-Fork website: “The mission of the Farm-to-Fork movement is to bring awareness to the Sacramento region’s local food production, consumption and sustainability as well as the contribution and exportation of sustainable products to the rest of the nation and world.”

Though that mission may be tough, the people at Bike Dog Brewery are committed to its completion and buying and selling locally is just one way they do it.

“Anytime you can reduce the distance between your raw materials and your finished product, it’s a good thing for everybody,” said Sage Smith, one of the four owners of the brewery. “One, you’re supporting the local economy. Two, you’re reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses that are pumping out of trucks [to transport materials].”

Bike Dog Brewery gets some of their raw materials from nearby Hood, an area of the Delta region of Sacramento County.

Besides supporting local commerce, the brewery, located on Industrial Boulevard, is also a very community-oriented entity.

“We wanted to have a place where we could serve good beer and a place where families, dogs and kids could come in and feel comfortable,” Smith said.

Bike Dog Brewery will be celebrating their one-year anniversary this month.

Amy Strecker and her dog Sammy have been patrons of the small batch beer brewery since it opened.

“The environment is real inviting and comfortable,” Strecker said. “It’s nice to have a place where a woman can feel safe.”

Sitting inside the brewery, it is easy to notice the many bottles and glasses with the Bike Dog logo on them and all the pets including a popular Dalmatian named Bailey.

One can hear the multi-faceted conversations and the ambient music that seems to fade when laughter erupts.

The Sacramento’s Brewer’s Showcase People’s Choice award on the shelf can be seen as well as old-fashioned bikes with kegs attached to the back.

Bike Dog Brewery is doing its part to support local exchange, promote sustainability and to help strengthen communities.

“Our goal is to be local, keep [the brewery] in West Sac, but grow with this community,” Smith said.
