(A playlist focusing on popular songs from 1995-2005)

With new musical acts debuting on a continual basis, there seems to be a never-ending supply of songs fighting to make an impact.

While there are a number of newer songs that are able to prove their worth on the airwaves, it can be nice to reminiscence with the tracks of yesteryear.

Here is a playlist guaranteed to bring back some fond, middle school memories.

“Waterfalls” by TLC

-Taken off TLC’s second album “CrazySexyCool,” this 1995 song tackled a multitude of social issues such as HIV/AIDS and gang violence, and become one of the group’s most successful tracks.

“I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly

-This track made its debut on the “Space Jam” soundtrack in 1996 before going on to receive three Grammys, as well as becoming the unofficial song for graduation ceremonies everywhere.

“The Boy is Mine” by Brandy and Monica

-Debuting in 1998, this song focused on two women dueling for the love of the same guy. The song spent a record 13 weeks on the Billboard charts, won a Grammy, and became the best-selling song of the year.

“…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears

-When this song appeared in 1999 on Spears’ debut album, it redefined the music landscape while simultaneously solidifying the naughty schoolgirl fantasy as a mainstay for years to come.

“Fallin’” by Alicia Keys

-Keys became an overnight household name when this Grammy-winning song about unstable love was released in 2001, establishing her as a dominant force in R&B music.

“Hot in Herre” by Nelly

-When this song dropped in 2002 it became an international club hit and had every woman stating, “Girl I think my butt gettin’ big!”

“In Da Club” by 50 Cent

-50 Cent made sure his presence was known when he released this song in 2003 off his debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” going on to become Rolling Stone’s 448th choice on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. [served as a popular club song/party song/bday song, etc]

“Yeah!” by Usher

-This song solidified Usher’s status as a R&B titan when this club-banger came out in 2004, eventually going on to win a Grammy, sell millions of copies and make everyone do the A-town stomp.

“We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey

-After a taking a hiatus from the music industry, Carey made a grand return in 2005 with this song. It spent 14 weeks at number one Billboard charts, becoming Carey’s 16th hit to make it on the charts.

“Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani

-Released in 2005 on Stefani’s debut solo album “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” this track became a mega-hit, becoming the first song ever to reach one million digital downloads.
