In the final day of the Copa de Causeway, Sacramento State men’s soccer lost to Air Force 1-0 after the Falcons netted a goal in the 85th minute.

Air Force and Grand Canyon were named co-champions of the tournament after UC Davis and Grand Canyon played to a 1-1 tie on Friday.

Despite a rough weekend, the Hornets had two players who were named to the all-tournament team as senior forward Chimdum Mez and sophomore defender Javier Munoz were nominated.

Sac State men’s soccer coach Michael Linenberger was not happy with the result, but he was proud that his players brought more energy than they did in their loss to Grand Canyon on Friday.

“We’re disappointed with the result but overall pleased with our performance today,” Linenberger said. “I thought we were miles above where we were on Friday. Soccer is an interesting game because the result is the same (as Friday) but our performance was a lot better.”

The Hornets record falls to 2-4-1 after the loss.

Air Force (4-0-3) remains undefeated with the win and has allowed three goals in their seven matches this season.

Sac State had multiple opportunities to score but just could never seem to finish.Air Force took more shots than the Hornets, 15-12. Though, the Hornets did have more shots on target, 6-5.

The men had three great chances to score before the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, freshman Devante Raynor was rejected by the Air Force goalkeeper on a sliding save to the right side of the goal. On the corner kick, Raynor lobbied the ball to senior forward Chimdum Mez who had a header that was blocked at the last second by the Falcons goalkeeper. Raynor also had a header opportunity just seconds before the end of the first half.

The Hornets were never able to make up for those missed chances in the second half.

Air Force junior forward Zach Hill was substituted into the game in the 82nd minute and was able to score the game-winner in less than three minutes. Hill scored after the Falcons passed the ball into the box and gave Hill a chance to finish inside the left post.

Mez had a chance in the 88th minute to tie the game on a header, but it sailed just high of the post.

Sac State will wrap up its program-record seven game homestand when they host Saint Mary’s on Friday at 4 p.m.
