Nevada Wolf Pack defeated the Hornets Friday 1-0 after freshmen forward Angel Meriwether scored in the 76th minute.

The Hornets’ initial opportunity to score came via corner kick in the 31st minute by sophomore Alexa Heinzer to midfielder Lydia Bowman, but was blocked by the Wolf Pack.

Nevada blocked another shot attempt by freshmen Amanda Mielke in the 35th minute, and the first half remained scoreless.

From an offensive standpoint, Nevada  (1-3-1) outshot the Hornets 12-8.

Sac State senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata had five stops, saving all but one goal attempt late in the game.

“We need to have better communication, and we got to get better as a team,” Mata said. “We have to work a lot harder.”

Sac State head coach Randy Dedini said today’s game was a tough loss.

“I’m disappointed that we lost our home game,” Dedini said. “We felt like we played really well and we had a few quality chances to score goals.”

Mielke said she feels as though the team needs to improve both offensively and defensively.

“We have to be better off [with] the ball,” Mielke said. “We can be too predictable to defend.”

Sac State women’s soccer continues at home  to compete against Canisius noon on Sunday.
