Coming off a two-game win streak last weekend, the Hornet men’s soccer team aimed to extend it to three Friday afternoon, but fell in overtime 0-1.

Sacramento State (2-3-1) lost to Grand Canyon University (2-3-0) in the 98th minute of the game.

The Antelopes finished the game when forward Niki Jackson’s shot was blocked by Hornet goalkeeper Philip Bru and landed at the feet of GCU’s midfielder Kyle Summerhill. Summerhill shot the ball into an open net with Bru on the ground.

The game was extremely physical from beginning to end. There were three yellow cards, two for the GCU and one for Sac State, and a combined total of 16 fouls. The Hornets committed six and the Antelopes recorded 10.

Despite the loss, Sac State was in command of the game. The Hornets controlled time of possession and played on the Antelope’s half of the pitch almost the entire game.

The Antelopes still managed to outshoot the Hornets 15-9 and had two more shots on target because they were able to connect passes and take shots on the move.

It was an especially frustrating game for Sac State coach Michael Linenberger said.

“I was very disappointed in my team today,” Linenberger said. “I thought we played poorly. I thought we couldn’t connect passes and our touch was poor.”

Linenberger hopes his team speech after the game will light a fire underneath the team heading into their match on Sunday.

“We will meet tomorrow morning and start the regeneration process for bodies and mind,” Linenberger said.

Senior leading goal-scorer Chimdum Mez spoke after the game about his team and what they need to change for their game against Air Force.

“Honestly, we just got to do better,” Mez said. “We didn’t come out too well today and we had our chances, but unfortunately they [Grand Canyon] ended up capitalizing and got the golden goal.”

This was the first game of the semi-annual Copa de Causeway, a four team, two-site weekend tournament hosted by Sac State and UC Davis. Whoever wins the UC Davis vs. Air Force game tonight at 5 p.m. will play Grand Canyon for the tournament title on Sunday.

Sac State has its second game of the weekend at Hornet Field Sept. 21 against Air Force at 1 p.m.
