In just its second road game of the season, the Sacramento State men’s soccer team lost 5-0 to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon.

The loss ends the Hornet’s non-conference portion of its schedule and puts their record at 2-5-2 for the season.

The Hornets hung around with the Roadrunners in the first half, only trailing 1-0. However, the Roadrunners unleashed a barrage of goals in the second half to blow out the Hornets.

The Roadrunners scored their only goal of the first half in the 40th minute after the Hornet’s committed a foul inside the box, which allowed CSU Bakersfield senior midfielder Joe Masumiya to convert the penalty kick.

CSU Bakersfield made the score 2-0 after Hornet’s goalkeeper Teddy Sampson made an initial deflection on the ball, but the Roadrunner’s junior forward Simon Doherty scored off of the rebound.

Six minutes later, the Roadrunners scored again when redshirt freshman Julian Zamora connected on a shot to the lower left corner to make the game 3-0.

Goals in the 71st and 90th minutes sealed the deal for the Roadrunners as they won 5-0.

The defeat was the worst loss for the Hornets, since a 6-0 loss at San Francisco in 2003.

The Roadrunners were offensively dominant with a 16-7 shot advantage for the game and 11 shots on goal. The Hornets didn’t have a shot on goal until the 68th minute; both coming from sophomore midfielder Bert Corona

The Hornets haven’t played well against the Roadrunners. In total, they have been outscored 19-0 in their last five games against Bakersfield.

Head coach Michael Linenberger said his team didn’t have the energy or bodies necessary to come away with a win.

“Obviously a disappointing performance today,” Linenberger said. “Bakersfield was good, but we just ran out of gas today. We expended a lot of energy on Friday and we were not able to recharge our batteries in time for this game.”

However, it wasn’t just lack of rest that was plaguing the Hornets. It has been a lot of injuries and bad luck. The Hornets only had 13 healthy position players remaining on a roster that has been deflated with injury after injury.

The Hornets and senior leading-goalscorer, Chimdum Mez, are moving on and focusing their sights on conference play.

“We have to move on and get ready for our conference opener on Thursday against Riverside,” Mez stated.

The Hornets return home to open Big West Conference play next week against UC Riverside 4 p.m. Thursday at Hornet Field.
