A dying moth was found in a salad purchased at Sacramento State’s The Buzz.

Joe Davis, senior journalism major and content managing editor at The State Hornet, discovered the bug while eating his lunch.

“I took a fork full of lettuce and mixed greens and as I put the bite in my mouth, I looked down and saw a bug with eyes looking up at me while I was chewing,” Davis said. “That basically ended my lunch.”

Immediately, Davis took the salad back to the restaurant and asked to speak to an employee. After explaining the situation, he was offered a refund and told a manager would contact him.

Davis refused the discount and said he cares more about ensuring something like this never happens to any student again.

“What if someone had eaten that?” Davis said.

John Adcock, a representative of The Buzz, called Davis and also offered a discount but Davis again said no.

Adcock said the salads are not made at Sac State but come from an off-site company that processes each salad through a metal detector and triple washes it.

“I don’t know where this could have happened in that process,” Adcock said.

Inquiries into the off-site company and the public health code process are pending while awaiting comment from Sac State University Enterprises Inc. Services.
