Art exhibit shows more then it tells

Mystery shrouds the week-long art exhibit, “Other Poetries” that features installation pieces by 31-year-old history graduate student Bobby Edwards and photography by 32-year-old alumnus Jeremy Lord.
The exhibit runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 in the R.W. Witt Gallery and the artist is not telling much about the details going into the project.
“(Edwards) is a very responsible student and we knew he’d do a very interesting show,” said Catherine Turrill, professor and chair of the art department. “I’m looking forward to the show. It should be very interesting.”
Edwards is a modern day renaissance man with knowledge in a variety of topics ranging from history, fine art, construction, poetry, art history and anthropology.
“My stuff personally is to give these objects a little bit of meaning attached to them and combining a series of those objects into something that has several meanings,” Edwards said. “It begins to be kind of like poetry in my understanding of it.”
Edwards’ installation pieces reflect a conversational style, flowing together and leaving the viewer to ponder his or her own devices to figure out what it all means.
“He deals with conceptual issues and expressing things in more abstract ways often,” said Turrill.
Although “Other Poetries” was originally a one man show, Edwards decided to add long-time friend Lord to the lineup.
“There’s a shared poetic quality of our work,” Edwards said. “I was going to do a show by myself, but I’m trying to promote [Lord] because I really like his work. Since we did a project before, it made more sense to include it all.”
Edwards and Lord met through a mutual friend and became good friends over time. The two skateboarded together and visit each other regularly even though Lord has now been living in New York for the last five years.
As a street photographer, Lord takes pictures of everyday people and objects that catch his eye.
“As long as someone gets excited, laughs or feels like they have connected with my photos, I am happy with that. I just want them to get a good feeling from looking at them,” he said.
Lord is showing ten different pieces, which portray street scenes from New York and New Mexico.
“The two will have an interesting interaction,” said Turrill.
This week-long exhibit is anticipated to be an exciting one with many different mediums used for the installation pieces. There is lots of mystery surrounding this exhibit because of the way it was set up.
Edwards has been involved with the Art department during his education at Sac State. Although he is a history major, he takes time to visit the art lab regularly and still finds time in his busy schedule to maintain a relationship with faculty members in the Art Department.
