The second and final day of the Lake Natoma Invitational resulted in USC coming out on top against eight crews on Sunday while Sacramento State placed ninth.

The regatta, co-hosted by UC Berkeley, brought competitors from Stanford, Notre Dame de Namur University, University of Tulsa, Kansas University, University of Wisconsin, Washington State University and USC.

The Hornets competed in eight heats on Saturday to kick-off the weekend long tournament, so none of the Hornet crews were able to make it into the petite final or the grand final taking place on Sunday to be paired with Kansas and Tulsa.

Cal, USC and Stanford were the top three crews that made times to compete for the grand final.

Despite not advancing to Sunday’s heat, the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four teams made times that qualified for third-level finals, as they took third place in each of the heats.

Varsity eight made a time of 7:10.6 in heat 1 and 7:08.4 in heat 2. The second varsity eight boat picked up times of 7:13.5 and 7:32.5, while Varsity four had times of 8:01.1 and 8:31.5.

Sunday’s races started with the novice eight petite and grand finals where Sacramento placed third and fourth in the novice eight petite final with times of 7:27.1 and 7:30.0 against Stanford (6:52.5) and Cal’s B team (6:58.3).

Sac State’s varsity four finished in third, trailing Kansas (7:42.6) and Tulsa (7:46.5) by 14.7 seconds along with second varsity eight, finishing with a time of 7:06.6, and varsity eight, finishing at 6:59.8.

The Hornets’ next race is the WIRA championship on April 27-28.
