Buzz of the Crowd: Sac State is golden at home
January 30, 2013
In my life, I have never been the type of person that would be called superstitious. I’ve walked under a ladder or two, I love black cats and, sometimes, I open umbrellas indoors.
Even as a passionate sports fan, I would never rub a rabbit’s foot before field goals or wear the same jersey during every game. It just seems a bit childish.
But recent events may turn me into a superstitious man. It seems that when Sacramento State men’s basketball team wears gold jerseys, its record improves significantly. Since 2003, the team’s record has been 31-13 while wearing gold jerseys.
This season, Sac State started wearing gold alternate jerseys in December and since then, the Hornets have been 4-0.
Junior guard Jackson Carbajal has only worn home white jerseys and road green jerseys since he has arrived at Sac State, but he said so far he loves wearing the gold.
“We have to stick with these jerseys,” Carbajal said. “I’ll wear a freaking skirt if we win – I don’t care.”
But as excited as the team and its fans are that men’s basketball is winning, you should not paint the school gold just yet, because new jerseys are not the reason; the reason is home court advantage.
Everyone, including myself, has walked into The Nest at Yosemite Hall and complained about something regarding our little gymnasium. Whether it is because it only seats 1,000, the bathrooms are extremely out of date or the innumerable times the scoreboard has malfunctioned, we all know that Sac State deserves a new facility.
Despite these setbacks, our basketball teams are successful there. This season, both the men’s and women’s teams have a combined record of 13-3 and the school sits below the University of Montana for a best overall home record this season in Big Sky basketball.
So as you order some food, pile into our tiny gym and wait while the shot clock gets fixed, remember that you are there to see a pair of successful basketball programs.
Sac State is not winning because of some new, gold jerseys, it is winning because it knows how to defend its nest.
