Diversity Career Panel coming to Sac State
February 22, 2012
The Sacramento State Diversity Career Panel is coming back to campus to discuss working with people with different backgrounds in future careers.
Students and alumni are encouraged to attend, especially those who want to know more about diversity in the workplace and future careers. The discussion will begin in the Multi-Cultural Center next to the University Library on Feb. 29 from noon to 1 p.m.
The purpose is meant to educate people about challenges they may face in a diverse workplace. The panel will include a veteran, a person from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, possibly a visually-impaired person and two other people from diverse backgrounds.
Candace McGee is the event manager and has been working at Sac State for more than 18 years. McGee manages the Internship Program, is a first-year academic adviser and helps students to prepare for interviews.
McGee said her main focus is to keep an eye out for employers who are willing to work with the program in order to give students opportunities.
“This is only the second time we have put on this event at Sac State,” McGee said. “It is a great event for people to learn about diversity in the workplace.”
McGee said those who attend the event should ask the panelists candid questions.
“The panel is warm and welcome to questions that would not normally be asked in any other situation,” McGee said. “It is important for students to know how diversity affects people.”
A moderator will be present to ask questions and toward the end there will be an open Q&A forum. Refreshments will be provided for those who attend.
