Career fair coming to Sac State
February 1, 2012
The biannual Sacramento State Career Fair will be held on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom. This free event is open to all students and alumni wishing to network with potential employers or learn about various career opportunities.
The possibilities for those attending the fair include volunteer work, internships, part-time jobs and full-time careers.
Some employers participating in the fair require applicants to be of a specific major or to have a bachelor’s degree. For instance, GE Energy requires applicants to have a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science, computer engineering or mechanical engineering; C.H. Robinson Worldwide prefers applicants to be business majors; whereas Apple Inc. has job openings for all majors and alumni.
The possibilities for those attending the fair include volunteer work, internships, part-time jobs and full-time careers.
Other businesses attending this event include: Advance Kids, Kaiser Permanente, Macy’s Inc., Progressive Insurance and Target.
Eva Gabbe, a Manager from the Employer Relations and Recruitment Programs at the Sac State Career Center said, “the career fair is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet face-to-face with employers who are hiring for full-time professional positions, part-time positions and internships.
Corporate Executives have been invited from government agencies, non-profit organizations and corporations to meet students, discuss opportunities, discuss the company and even offer opportunities to return to the company for a second interview, Gabbe said.
“These are key decision makers from human resources or managers of departments,” Gabbe said. “Students gain valuable information concerning industries and a look into that profession.”
Gabbe said a career fair offers real information from recruiters that a “glossy” brochure cannot provide. Students should bring resumes and be prepared to have a lively discussion on a profession.
Gabbe also said many students who have attended the fair have moved on to full-time careers and internships.
For those who are unable to attend the fair, the Career Center in Lassen Hall offers students a variety of useful tools such as resume writing and mock interview sessions. Besides Gabbe, there are eight other counselors in the Career Center who have a background in a specific area of study and can help students as well.
