Sac State police arrest bike thief suspect on campus

State Hornet Staff

Sacramento State police arrested Luther Rhiney, 44, on Jan. 17 on suspicion of possession of stolen property, parle violation and theft after being seen near the bicycle racks at the University’s Recreation and Wellness center.

He was identified by police by matching with surveillance photographs taken from a prior bicycle theft and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail soon after he was arrested for riding a stolen bicycle westbound on Folsom Boulevard.

University Police highly recommends students, as well as the entire campus community, to take advantage of their free bike registration service in order to help trace down stolen bicycles if reported lost of stolen.

The department is also encouraging bike owners to use a sturdy U-lock to keep their bikes safe from being stolen. Smaller cable locks tend to be an easier target for bike thefts.

University Police urges members of the campus community to report any suspicious persons or unusual activity to the campus police dispatch center. Also, feel free to contact the dispatch center with any questions regarding the arrest.

The dispatch center is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day and can be reached at (916) 278-6851.
