Hornets on the Move offers students the opportunity to improve fitness together

When it comes to a workout routine, running on a treadmill like a hamster on a wheel may not sound appealing to some.
To motivate students to stay active and train for the upcoming Sac State 5k Fun Run later this month, student interns at the Cove in the Well created the Hornets on the Move running group.
“Not only does this provide an opportunity for students to network together, but they’re also exercising and doing something healthy with one another,” said Amelia Stults, senior health science major and student manager for Active Minds on campus.
Using the campus as its main exercise tool, the group meets every Monday from 11 a.m. to noon and runs around or through the campus.
“With the weather being nicer, this is a nice way to get out and see the campus,” Stults said. “From the stadium to out by the river on the trails, the campus has so much to offer in terms of physical fitness opportunities.”
Kalyn Coppedge, health educator for Sac State’s student health and counseling services, said students often join the group around this time of year to help train for the annual Sac State 5k Fun Run. This year, the event will be on April 28.
“Running on the treadmill just doesn’t have the same feeling as running with others does,” Coppedge said. “These students push and motivate each other to not only work on their fitness, but to be able to run more efficiently in the upcoming 5k, as well.”
Agreeing with Coppedge, student intern and senior kinesiology major Kevin Pham said motivation from peers is important for any kind of physical activity.
“When you train with a group, it’s easier because you can motivate each other and it doesn’t feel like you’re working out,” Pham said. “This allows you to have fun while pushing yourself.”
To join Hornets on the Move, students are encouraged to come dressed in workout clothes with water in hand and run with the group on Monday mornings in front of the Well.
“Just show up and they will pair you with someone you’re comfortable with,” Pham said. “All running levels are welcome.”
If students cannot attend the Monday morning runs, Pham said using the Well to stay active or train for upcoming events is another option.
“There is an indoor track at the well that is always nice to run with a friend,” Pham said. “Whether it’s the treadmill or track, alone or with friends, we want people to just get out there and get active.”
