Sacramento State freshman Reesey Byers didn’t take long to find success during his first collegiate 5,000-meter race.

Byers set a school record in the 5K with a time of 14:19.01 Friday at the Stanford Invitational.

Byers, who broke Noel Hitchcock’s 1971 record, is the first to break the 4:30 mark in the 5K since Darren Slade in 1989.
