Soliciting on campus considered scam

The University Police Department determined recent magazine subscription solicitations targeting members of the Sacramento State community are part of a scam.

According to reports, solicitors approached members of the campus community claiming to sell magazine subscriptions as part of a fundraising effort for internships from the communication studies department.

The University Police put out a bulletin Tuesday warning the community that the scam is an attempt to obtain cash, credit card numbers and any other sensitive information from intended victims.

Officials warn the campus community to be wary of these solicitors and to report any suspicious activity to the campus police department.

Those who have been victimized by this or any other scam should call the University Police Department at 916-278-6851 and file a report as soon as possible.

A similar solicitation attempt occurred during the 2009-10 school year when solicitors targeted Sac State students by promising a scholarship if students paid an undetermined amount to the solicitors. The solicitors specifically targeted KSSU 1580 AM, the campus student-run radio.

Campus police officers have been handing out cards with safety tips to students in the University Union.

Among other safety tips, the cards encourage students to refrain from giving out personal information to strangers.
