ASI board discusses expanding voter registration to residence halls
October 13, 2010
Associated Students Inc.’s Board of Directors discussed door-to-door voter registration, approved a letter to The State Hornet regarding recent editorial cartoons and approved the 2010 to 2011 strategic plan during Wednesday’s board meeting.
Door-to-door voter registration
The board discussed whether clubs and organizations should be allowed to participate in door-to-door voter registration in the residence halls.
Rosalyn Klein, senior pre-nursing major and resident adviser, voiced her concerns with door-to-door voter registration.
Klein said it was a safety and privacy issue because only residents are permitted in the buildings.
“Why not (then) get the address of everyone who lives on campus?” Klein said.
ASI Executive Vice President Rylan Gervasesaid he knows firsthand the importance of privacy and community at the residence halls because he was once a resident adviser.
Senior government major John Ryan, who is also president of the College Democrats club, said he understands the privacy concerns, which is why he tried meeting with residence hall staff to schedule a time to go door-to-door.
Ryan said when he asked the housing and residential life staff to discuss going door-to-door, the staff would not meet with him.
“The residence halls didn’t even work with us,” Ryan said.
He hopes that if he can work with ASI, the residence halls would permit the door-to-door voter registration.
A final decision was postponed until further discussion with residence halls outside of the meeting can take place.
The State Hornet
Following discussion on sending a letter to The State Hornet, regarding recent editorial cartoons, the board voted to approve sending a letter.
Gervase said this is not an attempt to regulate what can be published.
“It is our duty to speak up for our constituents,” Gervase said.
ASI President Terry Martin believed the letter would be redundant because one was already sent.
Michael Soto, ASI director of social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, said the letter would ease the still prevalent tension on campus.
Sarah Couch, vice president of university affairs, said students continue speaking to her regarding the cartoons.
Strategic Plan
ASI board members approved the 2010 to 2011 strategic plan.
The two parts to the strategic plan include increasing student awareness of ASI and increasing student involvement, Gervase said.
