The Well grand opening
September 1, 2010
More than 200 students, faculty and staff attended the grand opening ceremony of Sacramento State’s Wellness, Education, Leisure, Lifestyle Center today.
Anticipation and excitement surrounded the opening ceremony, which began at 9 a.m. The ceremony started with about 75 students, faculty, and staff, and more came in throughout the day.
At 10 a.m., Sac State President Gonzalez cut the red ribbon and students, staff, faculty, and administrators entered through the doors of The Well.
“The turnout was really impressive,” said Peter Ucovich, 2004 alumnus, former Associated Students Inc. president, and proponent of the measure to build The Well. “This was a testament to the students’ wellness.”
The Well offered students and the community tours of the facility every five minutes throughout the day. The Fresh Made Yogurt Café, which is located inside The Well, gave out free samples of frozen yogurt to all of the visitors. The local Sac State radio station, KSSU, provided music for all attendants.
Employees from Sac State Recreational Sports recruited students outside and inside The Well to participate in the university’s attempt to break the record for the world’s largest dodgeball game, which will occur at 7 p.m. tonight.
“Think about the school,” Justin Edwards, junior sociology major and employee for Recreational Sports, said to students passing by the dodgeball sign-up table, “You’ll be in the record books!”
Students are welcome to register for the dodgeball tournament and sign up for tours of The Well until 6 p.m.
“Students, you designed it, worked for it, and agreed to pay for it. And now, finally, you can enjoy it,” Gonzalez said.
