Sacramento State women’s tennis player Katrina Zheltova has left the team for unknown personal reasons.

Zheltova, the reigning three-time Big Sky Conference MVP, has missed the team’s last 10 matches.

Zheltova, one of many players on both the men’s and women’s teams from Minsk, Belarus, was the No. 27 player in the country.

Bill Campbell, director of tennis at Sac State, was unable to comment on the subject and requested all questions be directed toward Athletic Director Terry Wanless, as the nature of Zheltova’s 10-match absence and subsequent departure is of a personal matter, he said.

In a Friday Sacramento Bee article, Campbell said Zheltova is visiting specialists next week to determine the problem. Campbell speculated in the Bee article that it might be an eating disorder.

UPDATE: In a telephone interview on Friday, Zheltova said the eating disorder claim was completely untrue.

Zheltova missed 11 matches last season due to an ovarian cyst. Campbell also told the Bee the health problems are unrelated.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are defending their 2009 conference titles April 24-25 at the Gold River Racquet Club in the Big Sky Tournament.
