Women’s tennis sweeps road trip

The Sacramento State women’s tennis team opened up a road trip to Southern Calif. by defeating the UC Irvine Anteaters on Friday.
The Hornets swept doubles play and won the first three singles matches by a score of 4-3.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 7-3 on the year, UC Irvine falls to 3-4.
Maria Meliuk and senior Aileen Tsan for Sac State swept doubles play with an 8-3 win over sisters Hayley and Miranda Young. Sophomore Tatsiana Kapshai and freshman Rebeca Delgado defeated UC Irvine’s Brooke Barlett and Kristina Smith by a score of 9-7.
Completing the sweep, senior Katrina Zheltova and sophomore Clarisse Baca beat Courtney Byron and Stephanie Hammel with a score of 9-8.
In singles play, Sac State was just as dominate Tsan opened up for the Hornets winning her fifth straight match, 6-0, 6-1 over Hannah Hollday, which gave the Hornets a 2-0 advantage in the match. Sac State took a 3-0 lead with Delgado beat Becka Kwan, 6-3, 6-4. Kapshai finished the day for the Hornets winning over Bartlett, 6-3, 6-1.
On Saturday, the women scheduled game against San Diego State University was cancelled due to rain. So the Hornets had a day of rest before they defeated the San Diego Toreros, 4-3 on Sunday.
In doubles play, Delgado and Kapshai won, 8-6, over Alexandra Demidova and Marite Raygada. Meliuk and Tsan continued the trend with an 8-4 win over Laura Claus and Justine Perl. Baca and Zheltova completed the sweep at doubles defeating Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica 8-5.
Winning three of the first four sets, Sac State took the singles match. Giving the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the match, Delgado defeated Lisa Marbach in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Tsan won her sixth straight match, winning over San Diego’s Marite Raygada, 6-3, 6-1.
Zheltova completed the match for the hornets, beating Juliette Coupez, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to make the lead 4-1 for the Hornets. The Toreros won the last two matches, giving Sac State the 4-3 win.Sacramento State next match is March 7 against Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
