Rowing wins seven races in Sac State Invitational

The Sacramento State women’s rowing team continued its strong start to the 2010 season during the Sacramento State Rowing Invitational held at the Sac State Aquatic Center in Rancho Cordova on Saturday.

In the invitational Sac State competed against nine other Calif. schools. The other schools were Humboldt State University, Saint Mary’s College, Cal, Sonoma State University, University of Santa Clara, Mills College, UC San Diego, University of Pacific and Cal Maritime University.

The Hornets competed in eight of the nine events and won seven of those events. Varsity lightweight four was the only category that the Hornets did not field a boat. In the novice four category, as they came in second with a time of 8:52.8 to first place Humboldt States time of 8:33.3

The varsity eight and second varsity eight boats for Sac State, had the strongest showing of all the boats that were fielded. In heat one, the second varsity eight boat beat the nearest competitor by nearly 39 seconds. The Hornets finished a head of Saint Mary’s with a time 7:02.6 to the Gaels’ time of 7:41.4.

In heat three, the Hornet varsity eight boat also had a very strong showing as they beat the Gaels once, this time by 23 second. Sac States finish time was 6:56.4 to Saint Mary’s time of 7:19.1.

The other events that the green and gold won were the novice eight, second novice eight, varsity four and novice lightweight four.

The Hornets will return to action in two weeks, when they will be heading to the San Diego Crew Classic held March 27-28.
