The suspect in multiple campus thefts and burglaries over the past months was arraigned today and is now in custody at the Sacramento County Jail.

Gary David Moreno, 29, was arrested on Thursday and is facing multiple charges of burglaries that occurred on and off campus. He is being held without bail.

Lt. Joseph Green of the Sacramento State Police Department said projectors, laptops and university master keys have been stolen in campus buildings, such as Kadema Hall, Calaveras Hall, Amador Hall and Douglass Hall.

Green said there were no signs of forced entry into the buildings. According to a press release from the police department, the burglaries and thefts occurred when the buildings are closed, and investigators assumed the suspect used a key to enter the buildings.

“He would watch and wait for staff members to leave their offices or go to the bathroom,”Green said. “Then he starts rummaging through their desks.”

Green said the multiple thefts and burglaries prompted the police department to review past cases that occurred on campus.

Detective Scott Christian of the Sac State Police Department found out that Moreno was arrested for burglary three years ago, at which time he also used university master keys to enter campus buildings.

Moreno was in jail for 10 months and has been on searchable probation over the last two years, Green said. This means he was released from jail, but was still supervised by a county probation officer. He is also required to submit to any searches by police officers.

“We decided to go to his house and do a probationary search,” Green said. “We recovered master keys, laptops, projectors and iPods and he was arrested immediately.”

Green said the Sac State Police Department and the Sacramento Police Department also believed that Moreno is linked to at least five other burglaries in Midtown.

He said not all of the stolen items were recovered. Investigation of these cases is still ongoing, and police officers are trying to contact owners of the recovered items.

Green said students, staff and faculty members should never leave their offices and valuables unattended.

“If they have properties lying around in offices, they need to secure them and make sure their offices are locked,” Green said.
