The Sacramento State women’s basketball team lost to San Jose State University on Friday night, 84-81 in overtime, at the Hornets Nest.

The Hornets led by five points at halftime and had to comeback at the end of the second period just to send the game to overtime.

A layup by Hornet guard Tika Koshiyama-Diaz with four seconds to play in regulation forced overtime.

The Trojans responded in kind at the end of overtime. A layup by guard Sayja Sumler with four seconds to play in overtime proved to be the game-winning hoop. Sumler finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Guard Charaday Hunt led the Hornets with 19 points and five steals before fouling out. Forward Emily Christiansen chipped in 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots. Koshiyama-Diaz scored 13 points and dished out five assists.

Trojan guard Chasity Shavers led SJSU with 21 points on 8-16 shooting. She also contributed seven rebounds and two blocks before fouling out. Forward Shaunna Ridge snagged a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Hornets were outrebounded 74-57 by the Trojans.

Despite forcing a season-high 36 turnovers, the Sac State could not overcome its poor shooting, making 25 of 89 shots, good enough for 28.1 percent.

Sac State was not immune to the turnover bug, either, turning the ball over 22 times.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-8 overall on the season. The team returns to action on Monday when they host the Academy of Art at 5:05 p.m.
