Women’s basketball loses first game in regular season

Sacramento State’s women’s basketball team lost its first regular season game to the Cal State Fullerton Titans at the Hornet’s Nest on Sunday.

The score was 90-68.

The only time the Hornets led during the game was during the first half with 17:52 left to play. They were up 5-4 after a three-pointer by senior forward Erika Edwards and two free throws by junior guard Jasmine Cannady. Afterward, the Titans went on a 12-0 run and the Hornets could not recover from there and were behind 46-31 at the half. During the second half, the Titans led by as much as 29 points with 9:05 left. The Hornets were led by Edwards and forward Charday Hunt, who scored 13 points, with all of Hunt’s points scored in the second half. Edwards also grabbed seven rebounds for the game. Cannady and junior forward Emily Christensen each scored nine points; however, Christensen only made 3 out of 14 field goals but also had seven rebounds for the game. Freshman Kylie Kuhns had a solid game coming off the bench, scoring six points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and three assists. With the loss, the Hornets start off the season 0-1 while the Titans improve to 2-0. After the game, Cannady was blunt about describing her team’s performance. “We didn’t play our game today,” Cannady said. “We could have ran a lot more, we just didn’t play our game.” Edwards said that effort is an area that the team should work on after playing against the Titans. “We just need to work on our enthusiasm more” Edwards said. “We didn’t work hard enough during our practices and it showed, so we just need to step it up.” Transitioning to a new roster and coaching staff is also something the team is still getting used to as well. “We’re running a new offense and defense from last year,” said head coach Jamie Craighead, who coached her first regular season game as head coach. “We still did okay, I thought our young kids played hard and I thought our veterans need to continue to step up. It’s harder for veterans to run something new.”
