The Sacramento State women’s rugby club won the UCSC Slugfest Tournament at UC Santa Cruz over the weekend.
The Hornets beat Humboldt State 21-5, UC Santa Cruz 15-0 and UC Davis 31-10 to take first place in the tournament.
Women’s rugby club president Lisa Roselin said she was very happy with the team’s performance.
“We are a small team, but very fast. We played pretty scrappy, but we were able to make it work. We have a brand new team with only 5 returning and the rookies really stepped their game up,” Roselin said. “Considering we’ve only been practicing for the past two months, I think we did a good job.”
Team captain Pamela Ames said she was pleased with the team as well.
“I just feel like our rookies are catching up pretty well. We are building up the team chemistry fast too. The intensity is definitely there, and is getting better. I think we played well considering we were limited in the amount of players,” Ames said.
