Sacramento State’s women’s volleyball team suffered a five set 3-2 loss to Santa Clara during the last game of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational.

“It was a really good team effort. We passed it very well and we played defense really well so it put a lot of pressure on Santa Clara to play,” coach Ruben Volta said.

Freshman outside hitter Janelle Currey earned her third straight double-double by giving 13 kills, three aces, which puts her at a team-high eight aces this season and 18 digs.

“I feel like we played really well and we worked really hard, its unfortunate that we did not come out with a win. I feel like we worked really hard for it and we played our best,” Currey said.

Both the Hornets and Santa Clara Broncos approached the fifth set with each team holding two sets a piece.

“This was kind of a heartbreaker to be honest with you,” Junior Middle Hitter Maddison Thivierge said. “We played our asses off and really competed with that team and we had plenty of chances to win, I just think we didn’t capitalize in all of them.”

Thivierge said she feels that if the team plays every game the way it did this one, it will be successful.

“It truly was a team effort,” Volta said.
