Kevin Johnson will be the new mayor of Sacramento after soundly defeating incumbent Heather Fargo in Tuesday’s election.

Johnson won 57.8 percent of the vote while Fargo won 42.2 percent. The city center, East Sacramento, Land Park and Curtis Park gave Fargo a majority of their votes, while Johnson did better in all other neighborhoods. Johnson won a commanding 72 percent of the vote in Del Paso Heights, and beat Fargo two to one in North and North-Central Natomas. He also ran strongly in the Meadowview and Valley Hi neighborhoods.

The candidates debated at Sacramento State on Oct. 6. On Oct. 31, Johnson visited the campus to speak at a rally sponsored by the Sacramento Progressive Alliance to promote Barack Obama and the group’s positions in close congressional races and state ballot propositions.

Johnson will be sworn in as mayor at the Nov. 25 city council meeting.
