Hornets fall to Aggies 1-0

It was a rough night on the pitch as the Sacramento State women soccer team loss to rival U.C. Davis Aggies 1-0 in the Causeway Cup tonight at Hornet soccer field. This loss came in front of the team’s biggest crowd of the season, which was mostly comprised of other Sac State student athletes who were out there supporting their fellow Hornets.

The Hornets (1-3-1) defense looked aggressive and strong in the first half as both teams were held scoreless. The tie was broken in minute 63 during the second half, when U.C. Davis forward Marisa Boge scored the games only goal.

“The defense played fairly solidly and held them to one goal,” said head coach Randy Dedini. “There was one brake-down that cost us that goal.”

The Hornets offense did not match its defensive intensity. Offensively the Hornets were missing creativity and aggression; however, the Hornets lost its one opportunity to score in the first half when senior midfielder Sarah Howard’s header hit the crossbar.

“It [intensity] wasn’t even there the entire game which is totally not like us,” said Sac State sophomore forward Erin Tarantino. “We’re usually go-getters.”

Sac State looks to finish their weekend off strong as the Hornets travel to San Jose to take on the San Jose State Spartans on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Hornets will have to do some adjustments before Sunday’s game, as San Jose State plays on a narrower field than the Hornets are used to.

Last weekend the Hornets beat U.C. Riverside 1-0 on a goal by junior forward Ashley Forbes, Sept. 5, but lost to U.C. Santa Barbara 2-0 on Sept. 7.
