CSU chancellor’s office reviews budget

The chancellor’s office for the California State University system is currently reviewing the budget Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed this week. Bob Buckley, computer sciences lecturer and University Budget Advisory Committee member said the final budget numbers will be available to Sacramento State at the end of the week at the earliest.

Buckley said he expects the budget to be at the levels issued in the governor’s May revise.

“We have heard nothing that would not go along with the May revise,” Buckley said.

“In May, the governor restored $97.6 million to the CSU budget after cutting $100 million in January,” Buckley said. “That leaves the CSU at approximately the same funding level as 2007 to 2008.”

Kevin Wehr, associate professor of sociology, said the cuts have a detrimental effect on students and faculty.

“We are being asked to do more with less,” Wehr said. “We are bleeding from these budget cuts.”

This year, the CSU enrollment system has added about 20,000 students not funded by the state.

“We made some decisions and did some things to close the structural deficit,” Buckley said.

More information will be available once the chancellor’s office has completed reviewing the budget.
