Women’s tennis falters in first round of NCAA tournament

The No. 53 Sacramento State women’s tennis team fell to No. 21 Arizona State4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday in Fresno.

With the loss, the Hornets’ season ends with a 21-7 record.

Arizona State won the doubles point with an 8-2 victory in the No. 1 match and an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 match.

In singles play, the Hornets fell with losses from juniors Anastassia Lyssenko and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez and freshman Melissa Valenzuela.

Nadia Abdala narrowly led Zheltova 7-5, 6-5 in the No. 1 match.

Junior Luba Schifris was the only Hornet to win a set (6-3) in her match at the No. 4 position. Junior Karina Jarlkaganova was up 5-3 in the second set of her match before it ended.

Sac State has a 134-43 record dating back to the 2002 season and has a minimum of 14 wins every season since.
