The Sacramento State baseball handily beat the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans Friday afternoon by a margin of 12-2.

Senior right fielder Brian Boyd hit the first two home runs of his collegiate career in the Hornets’ victory.

With the win the Hornets improved their record to 16-18 while the Vulcans dropped to 13-18 for the season.

Sac State turned a triple play in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on first and second base, a line drive was hit to junior first baseman Gabe Jacobo who stepped on first for the second out and threw to junior shortstop Blake Crosby, who tagged second base for the third out. It was the second time in the school’s Division I history that a triple play was recorded.

Boyd recorded a career-high five RBI as he went 2 for 3 at the plate. Jacobo had another solid performance as he drove in three RBIs while going 3 for 3 off of Vulcan pitchers.

Junior starting pitcher Jose Ramirez (4-3) earned the win for the Hornets as he scattered nine hits in five innings while fanning five Vulcans.

The Hornets will play the Vulcans again Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. at Hornet Field.
