Students put their design skills on model Wednesday at the “reFresh on the Runway” fashion show, a exhibition that put environmentally friendly clothes on the catwalk.

“Fashion competition is not like being in a sports team, harder than becoming a lawyer and doctor because you can only be one GUCCI or one Versace,” organizer Stephanie Bozzalla said.

The Student Fashion Association, a campus group that promotes professional apparel design and marketing, choreographed the fashion show. Proceeds from the show went to the Sacramento Children’s Home.

The students involved do not obtain credit toward their major, but instead obtain a hands-on experience of the pressures of meeting deadlines, stage presence and exposure to an audience. The show is a once-a-semester ritual by student fashion designers with a passion for the art. This spring, students created a new breed of fashion trends intended to be environmentally friendly.

Each of the 11 designers presented six to 12 pieces of clothing and selected friends and other students to model their pieces.

Vice President of the Student Fashion Association Officers Amie Denisova presented her “eco-friendly” clothing line consisting of recycled curtains, table cloths and linens.

“Environmental-friendly prevents waste. We can be very fashionable while helping our planet,” Denisova said.

The environmental-friendly clothing lines were presented at the second half of the program after models wearing designs with traditional fabrics walked the stage.

Mario Rosales attended the fashion show after being invited by his friend. Rosales felt the models were too nervous when walking the stage.

“I understand they are not professionals, but they need to be more focused when walking on a runway. I would have enjoyed the show much more if the models put on a good show,” Rosales said.
