Rec Sports put on golf tournament

Clear skies and a cool breeze from the Sacramento Delta made for perfect golfing weather as Sacramento State Recreational Sports hosted its annual Spring Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course. Twelve teams of two players each competed at the event.

The first place champions of the tournament were Brett Pieretti and Donnie Neilson with a team score of 9 under 71. The second place victors were Marc Martin and Aaron Brazier with a score of 3 under 71.

Awards were also given to the individuals who shot closest to the pin on the 85-yard Hole 17 and shot the longest drive on the 485-yard Hole 11. Rec Sports Assistant Coordinator Ryan McCallum claimed the first award by getting to within five feet of the pin and Marc Martin scored the longest drive with a total of 280 yards.

The top two teams won T-shirts and bragging rights until the next tournament, but everybody was given goodie bags filled with tees, golf balls and a snack just for participating.

The tournament was played to a standard 18 holes by way of the two-man scramble and double par max rules. The two-man scramble rule means that while both members of the team make their own drives and putts, both members have to swing from the farthest shot or the best position between the two. The only exception to the rule is that no team may use more than seven drives from the same player to determine the best position on the front nine and the back nine each.

The double par max rule was set in place to help keep a rapid flow of the game play. For this rule, the par for a hole is taken and doubled and a team may not collectively exceed this number. If a team’s members did and swung over the set amount, they simply picked up the ball from there and moved on to the next hole.

The last Recreational Sports special event will be the annual End of the Year Blowout on Friday at the pool in Yosemite Hall. Next week will be the championship games for the flag football and volleyball tournaments.
