Conflict resolution takes center stage at Faculty Senate
May 13, 2008
The Faculty Senate decided today to approve the recommendations made by the Center for Collaborative Policy in effort to resolve campus governance issues. The motion to move forward passed by a vote of 33-11.
Susan Sherry, executive director of the Center for Collaborative Policy said the coaching sessions that begin the three-part resolution will begin next semester. The process could take three to four semesters.
The end result is expected to be a campus community that shares responsibility of campus governance and has the necessary training to resolve conflicts amicably.
The Faculty Senate also heard from the Art Department about concerns relating to construction that has begun near the Art Sculpture Lab.
This construction has resulted in a reduction of parking spaces, forcing students to carry art work, sculptures and art materials across campus every day.
About 30 art students and art instructors attended the meeting to show support for the department. The students wore red to show unity.
The Art Department produced a resolution requesting the aid of the Faculty Senate in resolving the issues surrounding the construction, reinstatement of student parking and cancellation of the construction project.
The Faculty Senate unanimously agreed to assist the Art Department. The Art Department will be meeting with campus officials tomorrow to address and attempt to resolve the issues.
