Women’s tennis loses final match of regular season to Cal 6-1

The No. 43 Sacramento State women’s tennis team fell to No. 6 Cal 6-1 Friday at Hellman Tennis Center.

The Hornets’ lone victory of the match came from No. 48 sophomore Katrina Zheltova, who defeated former NCAA singles champion and No. 18 Susie Babos 6-4, 6-4.

Cal won the doubles point with a sweep of the matches. The No. 45 doubles team of Babos and Stephanie Kusano defeated Zheltova and freshman Melissa Vaenzuela 8-4 in the No. 1 match.

The Hornets’ season is not officially over as they will take a 19-6 overall record into the Big Sky Tournament, which starts Friday. The tournament runs through Sunday at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento.

They will have a bye until the semifinal round where they will face the lowest remaining seed at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
