Sac State gymnastics denied third WAC title

The Hornets scored their fourth highest score of the season, but three teams were able to score a little higher to take the title away from Sac State.

Host Boise State took the top sports with a 194.925, San Jose State finished second with a 194.725 and Southern Utah took third with a 194.575. Utah State (194.150) and Cal State Fullerton (192.650) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to round out the standings. Although Sac State didn’t obtain the title the Hornets will head to the NCAA Regional for the third consecutive year and fourth time in school history. Sac State should end the season ranked 35th nationally. The top 36 teams in the nation will qualify for the NCAA postseason. Reigning beam WAC champion Melissa Genovese placed second on the beam with a 9.850, just .025 behind Kellie Dangerfield of Southern Utah. Senior Genovese also placed third int the all-around with a score of 38.975. Genovese, freshman Alycia Chan and junior Amber Basgall were the only other Hornets to place in the top 10 during the championships. Chan tied for fourth on the vault with a score of 9.825 and tied for sixth on floor with a 9.850. Basgall tied for ninth with Genovese on floor with scores of 9.825. The Hornets will compete in the NCAA Regional on April 12 in Corvallis, Ore. at 6 p.m. Karyn Gilbert can be reached at [email protected].
