Pitching battle ends in ninth as Spartans edge baseball 2-1

After sweeping a doubleheader from the Spartans on Saturday, the Sacramento State baseball team lost the final game of the four-game series to San Jose State Sunday 2-1. The Hornets went into the day in first place in the WAC, but the loss dropped them a half game behind Fresno State. They are now 10-5 inside the conference (15-17 overall) while the Spartans improve to 8-11 in the WAC (17-16 overall).

The game went scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when Spartan left fielder Craig Hertler scored on a throwing error by Hornet right fielder Brian Boyd.

Sac State tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when senior catcher Travis Kirkman hit a sacrifice fly that scored Boyd from third base.

The Spartans scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Designated hitter Danny Stienstra, the Spartans’ third place hitter, led off with a single to left field and he was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. The next hitter, second baseman John Schaffer, singled up the middle, scoring Stienstra.

The Hornets went down in order in the bottom of the ninth and the game that had been a pitchers’ duel between starters Corey Weglin (Sac State) and Scott Sobczak (San Jose State) was over.

Sobczak earned the win, pitching a complete game. He did not walk a batter as he scattered eight hits and struck out six Hornets. Weglin was charged with the loss as he went eight innings, allowing five hits while striking out four and walking three.

The Hornets will cross the causeway to take on the UC Davis Aggies at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Davis.
