Streaks snapped and another WAC honor
Marina Borisova did not compete due to illness in the last gymnastics meet, snapping her streak competing in the all-around event of 27 on Sunday.Melissa Genovese also had her all-around streak snapped at 23 meets when she did not compete on bars.
Genovese was named Western Athletic Conference Specialist of the Week for the third time this season with her 9.90 on beam in Sac State’s victory over Alaska, Anchorage. She has won the event six time this season.
Women’s tennis nearly flawless in Big Sky
The women’s tennis team improved to 10-1 in the Big Sky Conference after the 7-0 victory over Pacific on Sunday.
Wind too much for men’s doubles
The Sac State men’s tennis team fell to Utah 4-2, but due to wind only the singles were able to compete on Sunday.
Another title in the books
Sac State held off Weber state as the men and women topped the 2008 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The men won with 141 points to Weber’s 140 and the women won the title for the first time in school history with 112 to Weber State’s 111.
Senior Raphael McFarlane claimed the honor of Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet and the Field Athlete of the Meet, marking only the second time a Hornet has won both titles in the same meet in conference history.
He won the long jump on Friday, the 60-meter dash and 200 on Saturday and finished second in the triple jump. McFarlane’s 6.70 seconds was a meet record in the 60-meter dash. The senior also posted a record for individual points at the championships.
Coach Kathleen Raske was named the Big Sky Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Men and women snag Big Sky honors
Sophomore Anton Stryhas and junior Karina Jarlkaganova were named Big Sky Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week.
Stryhas went 5-0 in No. 2 singles, which lead the Hornets to 2-3 record away from home.
Jarlkaganova went 3-0 in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles as the Hornets went 3-0 on the week.
Sophomore tops pitcher of the week honor
Brittani Clifford was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Pitcher of the Week as Hornet softball went 5-2 on the week. This is her first pitching honor in the PCSC.
The right-hander went 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA and a save over three appearances.
Senior golfer earns honor
Heather LeMaster was named Big Sky Confernce Golfer of the Week, which is the first in her four-year career. She led Sac State at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational by shooting 149 and the Hornets tied for 13th place.
