Men’s basketball eliminated from playoff race with 87-82 loss to Montana State

The Sacramento State Hornets lost another game on the road, falling to the Montana State Bobcats 87-82 on Sunday.
With the loss, the Hornets are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a record of 4-20, 2-10 in the Big Sky Conference. The Bobcats’ win improves its record to 15-10, 7-5 in conference.
Hornets’ freshman guard Vinnie McGhee recorded a career-high 30 points on 8-11 shooting and was perfect from the three-point line (6-6) in the loss. Guards Clark Woods (13) and Loren Leath (11) combined for 24 points.
The Bobcats scored an early three-pointer in the opening minutes of the game and never lost the lead throughout. The lead grew to 25 in the opening minutes of the second half.
The Hornets were able to cut the lead midway through the second half with a 41-19 rally, but missed field goals and turnovers cost the Hornets a much needed victory to stay in the playoff hunt.
The Bobcats had five players score in double-digits: Guard Casey Durham (19), who led the team in scoring, center Divaldo Mbunga (17), guards Carlos Taylor (15) and Mecklen Davis (14), and forward Phil Friesen (14).
The Hornets’ next game concludes a three-game road trip Thursday against Northern Arizona at 5:35 p.m.
