An off-the-wall (and ceiling) success

Sacramento State Recreational Sports held its 1st Annual Racquetball Tournament today at noon at the handball courts located next to Solano Hall. The event was part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness for recreational sport activities to increase student participation.

Recreational Sports Assistant Coordinator Ryan McCallum said that they are trying out non-traditional sports and special events to get students more interested in the activities that Rec Sports does. He said that they are planning on doing at least one special event a month.

Special Events Supervisor Ashley Draper said, “We want to diversify participation and get everybody involved.”

Of the 23 players who signed up for the tournament, 13 were members of Kappa Sigma. Although the event was not a team tournament, Kappa Sigma’s show of support for the event earned it enough All-Campus Champions points to place the fraternity at the top of the rankings, past the rec sports team fielded by Pi Kappa Alpha.

But it was a member the PIKEs who won the whole tournament. Cory Kleinfeldt, a junior who is currently majoring in business management, edged out racquetball club member Brandon Evans in the finals with a score of 21-3, 21-10. The other semi-finalists included Steve Powell and Eric Sanchez, both members of Kappa Sigma, and Jamie Kneitel, who is a professor on campus.

The next special event is the Basketball Blowout which will be held at 7 p.m. on March 6 in Yosemite Hall.
