Winter break, winter fun
December 14, 2007
One more week and it’s all done. For each student, getting out of that last final is the start of winter break, and winter break means something different for each student.
It’s a time to relax, a time to visit family, a time to catch up on sleep and fun activities, and if you’re unfortunate enough to be stuck here in Sacramento then fret not, there’s plenty to do here according to Sac State students.
Josh Comprendio, 20-year-old graphic design major, had a smile from ear to ear counting down the days the semester is over and the day he heads to Tahoe to visit family and to snowboard.
“I’m quitting my job. I’m going to Tahoe to snowboard every day. Snowboarding is my only freedom,” he said.
Comprendio along with other Sac State students highly recommend snowboarding if you’re stuck in Sacramento. Tahoe is not a far drive and its one activity students have to experience while they’re here in Sacramento.
Comprendio, no stranger to Tahoe, plans on working at a casino while snowboarding and is planning to enjoy the influx of beautiful Brazilians who visit Tahoe during the winter.
“I guess they get tired of the beaches and it’s very violent over there. I don’t know what it is but every winter we got a lot of Brazilians, and Brazilian girls are hot,” he said.
If snowboarding, cold environments, and snow bunnies aren’t your thing then there are plenty of alternatives around Sacramento to keep you entertained.
Tarryn Cannon, 24-year-old social work student suggests taking a stroll downtown and checking out the outdoor ice skating rink at the downtown mall. Or if ice skating isn’t your thing, try indoor rock climbing at Pipeline.
“Ice skating downtown only costs $7 dollars and rock climbing only costs $20 so they’re not too expensive,” she said.
If you’re more the artistic type, Cannon also recommends Sacramento’s excellent theatre and entertainment venues. Pickup a Sacramento Bee or a Sacramento News and Review and you’ll find all the information you need.
There are plenty of things to do in Sacramento as long as you know where to look. Comprendio was surprised to find so many things to do while looking around downtown Sacramento and searching for things on the Internet.
“There’s a ton of stuff to do and a lot of things are underground. You can take samba classes, capoeira classes, and underground break dancing clubs,” he said. “You can go to Old Sacramento and find a lot of things to do. Just drive down there, park your car, and walk around.”
If you’re the dancing type then don’t miss out on the nightclubs and the dancing classes offered around the Sacramento area.
Jessica Love, 24-year-old graduate student can’t wait for finals to be over so she can go out and dance. She recommends salsa dance classes offered at many night clubs including Azukar and Club 21.
Students also recommend hitting the downtown nightlife scene if they want something interesting to do during the night time.
“If they’re bored then definitely hit the nightclubs. There are Cabana Ultra Lounge, Empire and Faces,” said Yer Thao, 21-year-old sociology major.
It’s also important to note that although students will take advantage of winter break to relax and have fun, many are also using that time to get ready for the spring semester.
Mike Cesario, a student at Sac State loves to travel and has gone to clubs, but he knows it’s important to prepare for the next semester.
“I’m planning to relax. I mean I love to travel and get out, but I’m going to start working because I need the money for next semester,” he said.
